experimental solos and undergraduate choreography highlights

gemina, 2019 - experimental solo

this was a piece i devised in 2019 from the Anne Sexton poem, Small Wire.

it's very angsty!

i presented it at Zuzi No Frills, an open mic night for dance hosted by Zuzi Dance.

supervoid, 2017 - improvisational solo

i pulled this piece together (saying i "choreographed" it would be generous!) sometime during or shortly after massage school but before my Pilates training. i presented it at Zuzi No Frills, an open mic night for dance hosted by Zuzi Dance. (they're good people!)

i was NOT regularly dancing, i was extremely unhappy with my body, my hypermobility was truly out of control, and i made myself put something on stage to prove i was Still A Dancer and to prevent my practice from stagnating.

it contains bits of research i did in college, and also a lot of rolling around to Tom Waits.

(music cred: Interlude 1 by Alt-J and Rain Dogs by Tom Waits. no copyright infringement intended).

undergraduate choreography

2015 - eris rising - self-choreographed solo

eris rising was a self-choreographed solo I workshopped in 2014 for my college's fall/winter student choreography showcase.

i made it because i was mad about a lot of stuff, and my vibe was very "discord and destruction" at the time. i think this was probably the healthiest outlet i found for all that rage!

an external adjudicator from outside our dance department would come and watch the student showcase and then choose a few pieces to be performed in the big, invitation-only dance concert hosted every spring.

eris rising made the cut, and i performed it again in 2015 for a larger audience (the footage below).

imbalance of humours, 2014 - group piece

this was a group piece i choreographed in collaboration with the dancers in 2014 for the fall/winter student showcase. (Maura and JP, the duet partners, were especially helpful in developing their parts).

i wanted to explore what it is to operate outside the mainstream, and both the joy and difficulties that arise when you find someone else who also doesn't quite fit the mold.

luna's muses, 2012 - group piece

this was the first piece i ever choreographed. (the dancers helped a lot-- we pretty much devised this whole thing from their character improvisations).

different people process trauma in different ways. some internally, by blaming themselves. some externally, with anger or projecting on others. some, through deviant behavior or dissociation.

at the infinitely wise age of 20, i'd observed these patterns in myself and others and wanted to make a weird, creepy, slightly tender dance about them.
